Neurophysiological and emotional influences on team communication and metacognitive cyber situational awareness during a cyber engineering exercise

Cyber operations occur at superhuman speeds, relying on effective human communication to achieve shared situational awareness for sound defense decisions. The Orient, Locate, Bridge (OLB) model offers a three-phase metacognitive approach to enhance communication and decision-making in cyber defense. Successful OLB execution requires cognitive control to balance self-referential and externally directed processes, linked to the frontoparietal control network's interaction with the default mode network. Emotional responses can disrupt this balance, leading to poor decisions. Vagal tone, which reflects activity in the brain's control networks, is associated with better functional connectivity and decision-making under stress.
